CM Gates Secures Fully Funded Training Through JBM and Skills Development Scotland

As CM Gates & Barriers continues to grow, so does the responsibility that comes with being trusted to look after access and perimeter security across more sites throughout Scotland. For us, that growth has to be supported by the right people, with the right skills and opportunities to keep developing.

CM Gates Team secured funding to improve skills & qualifications in electric gates and barriers

Through the support and expertise of JBM, CM Gates has secured fully funded training, giving employees across the business the opportunity to work towards recognised qualifications at SCQF Levels 6 to 10. The qualifications have been selected around each person’s role, existing experience, development needs and longer-term professional plans.

JBM worked with CM Gates to identify suitable development pathways for the team and supported us in accessing Scottish Government funding through Skills Development Scotland.

For us, this is about much more than adding qualifications to a list. It is an investment in building a more knowledgeable, capable and accountable team as CM Gates continues to grow.

A development plan built around our people

Every member of the CM Gates team went through an individual assessment with JBM before being assigned a development pathway. Instead of putting everyone through the same generic programme, the qualifications were selected according to each person’s responsibilities and professional ambitions.

The result is a wide range of learning across the company, with qualifications ranging from SCQF Level 6 through to Level 11. Depending on the programme, employees will work towards their qualifications alongside their day-to-day roles over approximately the next one to two years.

This work-based approach makes a lot of sense for our business. Our team can continue working on real projects, dealing with real sites and supporting our clients while developing knowledge that is directly relevant to the work they do.

JBM specialises in work-based learning and Modern Apprenticeship programmes, helping businesses develop employees through vocational qualifications relevant to their roles and industries. Their support has allowed us to look at development across the whole company rather than treating training as a one-off exercise.

What does this mean for our clients?

For facilities managers, contractors and organisations responsible for multiple sites, choosing a perimeter security contractor is about much more than finding somebody who can install an electric gate or repair a barrier. The company you appoint may be responsible for equipment that affects site security, safe access, vehicle movements and the day-to-day operation of your premises.

As CM Gates becomes trusted with larger sites, more complex projects and a wider range of perimeter security assets, we believe the capability of our people needs to grow with that responsibility. Technical ability on site is obviously important, but so are good project management, leadership, communication, planning, health and safety, compliance and the ability to support a client properly throughout a project.

Investing in professional development allows us to strengthen those skills throughout the business. It means developing not only the engineers and people carrying out the work, but also those responsible for supervising projects, managing teams, supporting clients and making decisions behind the scenes.

Ultimately, we want our clients to have confidence in the whole team behind their sites, not just the equipment we install.

Growing while keeping high standards

CM Gates is still a relatively small team, but the scale and complexity of the work being trusted to us continues to grow. We are working with larger organisations, supporting more commercial sites and gradually expanding the range of access and perimeter security assets we can look after.

That growth creates an opportunity, but it also creates responsibility. We do not want to become a bigger contractor simply by taking on more work. We want the knowledge, processes and people within the company to develop at the same time.

This was one of the priorities set out by our General Manager, Lewis Armit, when he moved into the role earlier this year. His plan for the next stage of CM Gates is centred around raising operational standards, strengthening accountability and building the internal capability needed to support increasingly demanding sites and clients.

Lewis was also the driving force behind putting this training arrangement in place. Working with JBM, he helped make sure the programme was not simply about accessing available funding, but about identifying where each person could genuinely develop and how that development could support the company in the long term.

Thank you to Ross Devine and JBM

A programme involving the development needs of an entire company takes a considerable amount of coordination, and Ross Devine from JBM has played a major part in getting us to this point.

Ross took the time to speak with members of our team individually, understand their roles and ambitions, and help identify the qualifications that made the most sense for them. Together with the wider JBM team, he also helped CM Gates navigate the funding available through Skills Development Scotland and turn it into a structured development plan for the business.

JBM has more than 30 years of experience in work-based learning and supports businesses and employees through vocational qualifications and Modern Apprenticeship programmes. Having that expertise behind the process has been particularly valuable for a growing business like ours, where training needs to be relevant to what people actually do and where the company is heading.

We would like to give Ross and the wider JBM team a big thank you for their support in reaching what is a significant milestone for CM Gates.

Investing in the team our clients will rely on tomorrow

Electric gates, automatic barriers and perimeter security systems are long-term assets, and many of the client relationships behind them are long-term too. Some of the organisations we work with trust us across multiple sites, which makes continually improving the people responsible for those sites even more important.

The funded training gives our team a valuable opportunity to develop over the next couple of years, but the bigger picture goes beyond the qualifications themselves. It is about creating a culture where people continue learning, take greater responsibility and have a clear path to progress as CM Gates grows.

We are proud of how far a relatively small team has come, but we also know that earning greater trust from our clients means continually raising our own standards. Investing in our people is one of the most important ways we can do that.
